#Khmer New Year (Some Knowledge)
-When is Khmer New Year celebrated? Why?
+The Khmer traditional New Year is celebrated every year on April 13 or 14 (Chet month).
This festival lasts three (3) days. Cambodia considers Khmer New Year a national traditional festival.
#When: Khmer New Year is celebrated at the end of December (Kathika-Mikasir)
But because farmers have not yet finished harvesting, they move this festival to
April.
They celebrate the New Year to celebrate the arrival of the New Year gods
and to celebrate the completion of the farmers' harvest work.
The New Year festival is divided into three days: the first day is called
#New Year's Day, the second day is called #Varawanpat, and the third day is called
#Varalangsak.
When did the Buddhist Era change to 2564?
=============❓===========
I always ask the question of what era is the Khmer New Year?
In fact, the Khmer New Year is the beginning of the Chola Era and the Maha Era, not the beginning of the Buddhist Era. The words Eksak, Sanak, Trisak, etc. are also related only to the Chola Era and the Maha Era, not to the Buddhist Era and the Christian Era.
The new Buddhist Era begins on Thursday, 1st Rouch of the month of Pesakh, the year of Chaot Sanak, Buddhist Era 2564, corresponding to May 7, 2020.
So why is the Khmer New Year written as the Khmer Traditional New Year, B.E. 2564? At this point, the National and International Festival Organizing Committee decided to use it like this because the only difference is a few days. It will be the new Buddhist Era, which means it will enter the new year. However, in writing the official date, you have to wait until 1st Rouch of the month of Pesakh before you can change it. B.C. is counted from the Buddha's Parinirvana and one day. If we consider the 6th day to be Visakha Punnami, then the 7th day is B.C. 2564.
#History of Khmer New Year
===================
According to the document (Jiw Ta Kwan) Jeaw Ta Kwan
states that the Khmer have had a New Year's celebration since ancient times, with the first month of the month of Mikasi and the last month of the month of Kuttika. Every time the month of Kuttika changes to the first month of the month of Mikasi, the New Year's celebration is celebrated.
Later, during the reign of King Potum Soravong, he understood that that month was a busy month for agriculture, and the people did not participate in the festivities widely. There were concerns about the agricultural harvest and the weather was not suitable. He decided to move the New Year's celebration to the month of Chetra, from Monday, the 12th day of the month of Chetra, the year of the Kor Eksak, B.C. 1639, A.D. 1183 until now.
According to the Khmer dictionary of Samdech Preah Sangha Raj Chottanano Chuon Nath, page 1049, talking about the rules of the lunar calendar, there are 12 naktra ruksa, namely the Mikasira ruksa at the beginning and the Katikaruksa at the end. A lunar year has 354 days. If the year has a golden moon, the golden moon (Athikavara) has 355 days, which is a golden year.
This New Year's celebration was further changed by King Samdech Preah Aungkar, Preah Harirak Rama Issaradhimati Ang Duong on the 4th day of the month of Chet, B.E. 2396, C.E. 1852, A.D. 1774, C.E. 1214 in front of the royal family, the generals, and the royal family, to welcome the New Year, prepare to receive the New Year's deities, and play various nakhat-ruk games every 3 days.
👉This is correct because in all eras there are four: 👉The Buddhist era is after the Buddha's Parinirvana and now
👉The Christian era is counted from the time Jesus was born (but according to the Vachanathippa, Chapter 11, page 104, it is also stated that no one knows the exact year Jesus was born, but there is also some evidence that Jesus Christ was born on December 25, between 543 B.C. and this year, according to the book Compare Religions by Mr. Trang Hiang published in 2002 from Phnom Penh) It is believed that the Christian era began after 543 BC, that is, in the year 544 BC, that is, the year AD is counted as the first.
👉The Great Era began after 620 BC, that is, in the year 621 BC, that is, the year of the Great Era is counted as the first (the Khmer of the Nokor Thom period used this Great Era).
👉The Chola Era began after 1182 BC, that is, in the year 1183 BC, that is, the year of the Chola Era is counted as the first.
👉There is another cycle that Khmer law uses in conjunction with the 12 years, which is a short cycle. The names of the 10 cycles are combined and the years are counted as follows, but counting from the year of the Kor:
The year of the Kor, Eksak = the first cycle
The year of the Rat, Chaot = the second cycle
The year of the Pig, Trisak = the third cycle
The year of the Rat, Chatva = the fourth cycle
The year of the Rat, Panchasak = the fifth cycle
The year of the Dragon Chhasak = 6th Sak
Year of the Monkey, Year of the Snake During this festival, Khmer people, young and old, men and women, bring their own food, prepare food, receive the gods, take offerings, count (place) bowls, give them to the monks, and play various games....
- Please try to calculate
the 6 eras in Khmer tradition:👇
For example:
This year, the Christian era is 2020
2020 + 753 = Roman era ...... 2773
2020 + 633 = Classical era 2653
2020 + 543 = Buddhist era ..... 2563
2020 - 78 . = Mahasakaracha .. 1942
2020 - 638 .= Cholasakaracha .... 1382
Example:
This year is Buddhist Era 2564
2564 + 210 = RS.. 2774
2564 + 90 . = BS. 2654
2564
- 543. = AD 2021
2564 - 621. = AD 1943
2564 -1181 = AD 1383
